Summary: The boy who dared
The boy who dared is a historical fiction book, meaning that it took place in history but the conflict in the actual book itself is fictional. Susan Campbell Bartoletti did a great job of portraying the cruel and ruthless mentality that the Nazis and the Gestapo had.
The book is told from the point of view from a boy who was brought into a world where he was told how to think and what to believe. Finally having enough he decides to and rise up and try to change the way he lived. Helmuth, the main character, begins to go into the mindset of being able to give up safety for the liberty of freedom, by listening to a BBC broadcasting on a short wave radio* and writing pamphlets and posting them all around the city. He pretends to be as faithful Nazi on the outside to his teachers and classmates, but every night he goes into defiance of the laws to learn what is really happening in the world he is sheltered from. New laws are being passed every day to make the jews life more miserable, for reasons that leave him dumbfounded. Citizens started turning in the pamphlets to the Gestapo. Soon, Helmuth is brought in by the Gestapo and is being accused of enemy propaganda**, being punished for telling the truth.
